Valentino Mórtola is an Argentine biotechnologist from Corrientes, Argentina, whose career spans academia, scientific research, and innovation management in the public sector. His work focuses on the intersection of biotechnology, data science, energy systems, and technology-driven economic development.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from the Universidad Nacional de San Martín (UNSAM), graduating among the top students in his cohort. During his academic training, he conducted research in microbiology, bioenergy, and neuroscience. At the Instituto Leloir, he participated in neuroscience research projects, gaining experience in experimental science and translational research. His undergraduate thesis focused on biological hydrogen production through anaerobic fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass, exploring sustainable pathways for renewable energy generation.
Seeking to complement his scientific background with quantitative and computational skills, Valentino completed a Diploma in Data Science at the Universidad Nacional del Nordeste (UNNE), where he worked on machine learning applications in healthcare. He further expanded his training through an international Big Data Analytics program sponsored by the Government of India and conducted at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), gaining experience with large-scale data systems and modern analytics tools.
Since 2021, he has held leadership positions at Caá Cannabis, the medicinal cannabis company of the Province of Corrientes. As General Manager, he has coordinated multidisciplinary teams involved in production, quality systems, regulatory affairs, research and development, and commercialization. Under his management, the organization achieved ISO 9001 certification, strengthened partnerships with universities and research institutes, and advanced the development of medicinal cannabis products for patients across the province.
Throughout his career, Valentino has worked across academia, research, and public-sector entrepreneurship, translating scientific knowledge into scalable solutions with social and economic impact. His interests include artificial intelligence, biotechnology, energy infrastructure, and innovation policy. Valentino will pursue a Master of Data Science at Rice University, where he aims to deepen his expertise in AI and data engineering while building on his academic, research, and professional experiences to develop technology-based solutions that foster sustainable growth, scientific progress, and human well-being on a global scale.

I’m especially excited about Houston’s cultural diversity, its renowned food scene, and the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. I also enjoy outdoor activities and look forward to trying water sports and exploring the region during my time at Rice.
