About Dr. Citino:

Nathan J. Citino is the Barbara Kirkland Chiles Professor of History.  He is a historian of U.S. foreign relations specializing in the Middle East.  He previously served as associate editor of Diplomatic History and on the board of editors of the International Journal of Middle East Studies.  Professor Citino is the author of From Arab Nationalism to OPEC:  Eisenhower, King Sa‘ud, and the Making of U.S. - Saudi Relations (Indiana University Press, 2002, 2d ed. 2010).  His second book, Envisioning the Arab Future:  Modernization in U.S.-Arab Relations, 1945-1967 (Cambridge University Press, 2017), was awarded the Robert H. Ferrell Book Prize by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations.  He has published scholarship in Diplomacy & Statecraft, the Business History Review, Cold War History, the Journal of Cold War Studies, the Arab Studies Journal, and the International Journal of Middle East Studies. His research has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies and the Institute of Advanced Study, Durham University. He also participated in the China Residency Program of the Organization of American Historians. In 2020, he received the Scholar’s Award from the Truman Library Institute to support a new book project about U.S. empire in the Middle East.  In 2026-27, he is the Fulbright-Mary Ball Washington Scholar at University College Dublin, Ireland. 

What I like most about Rice/Houston:

I enjoy working with brilliant Rice students and faculty!  I also love Houston's wonderful human diversity!

What do you like most about the Fulbright program?

Talking to people outside the U.S. and learning about their perspectives challenges what I think I know as a scholar and teacher.
