Program: Master of Science in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Home Country: Australia
Universities: Monash University
Brendan Cohen is an Animal Biologist, Wildlife Storyteller and two-time National Geographic Young Explorer Nominee. Whether in the field, behind a camera, or working with scientists, Brendan’s goal is to inspire curiosity, promote scientific research and strengthen the nexus between wildlife and storytelling.
As a Fulbright Scholar, Brendan will pursue a MSc in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, focusing on how species evolutionarily respond and structurally adapt to extreme and rapidly changing environments, while investigating how research is most effectively communicated. Together, these insights could guide conservation efforts and inspire storytelling strategies.
He holds a BSc. (Zoology) from Monash University and received the Dean’s Award for Science Communication. His fieldwork spans from surveying platypus in Australia’s rainforests, tagging alligators in the Florida Everglades, filming live safaris in the African Bush, and restoring coral reefs in Mexico.
Brendan is the Founder of the Emerging Scientists Network, a platform that supports early-career scientists, promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, and empowers youth to be future leaders. He’s worked as an educator with Zoos Victoria, presenter for BBC Earth Experience, host for Jackson Wild, and is a PADI Rescue Diver.
Looking ahead, Brendan aims to strengthen and expand Australia’s conservation storytelling industry by establishing a platform to support opportunities and pathways. Brendan is extremely honoured and excited to be part of the Rice community.
