From Lab to Life: My Fulbright Year at Rice

My journey as a Fulbright scholar from India to Rice University in Houston was nothing short of transformative.

My journey as a Fulbright scholar from India to Rice University in Houston was nothing short of transformative. Arriving in August 2022, I carried with me a mix of excitement, curiosity, and a deep desire for academics at one of the world’s best institutions. What unfolded over the next ten months was a tapestry of unforgettable experiences.

Research with Prof. Aditya Mohite: A Scientific Adventure

My academic journey at Rice was anchored in the lab of Prof. Aditya Mohite at CHeBE, where I delved into cutting-edge research in solar cells. Under his mentorship, I began to see beyond the conventional focus on what I call "publishing-e-waste"—research driven solely by the pressure to publish. Instead, Prof. Mohite inspired me to embrace a more meaningful approach, one I now refer to as "Do-epic-Science".

A standout moment was when Prof. Mohite sent me to the synchrotron at Brookhaven National Labs for week-long experiments. Running experiments on one of the most gigantic instruments on Earth—what a thrill!

Brookhaven was in the middle of nowhere—Ronkonkoma on Long Island, a quiet, tightly secured, and almost deserted place. Yet, within its walls, a vibrant community of scientists from every corner of the globe. It was a humbling reminder that science transcends boundaries, uniting people under one roof to selflessly tackle global challenges.

India: Curries, Culture, and Cuisine Workshop

One of the most rewarding experiences during my time at Rice was organizing a workshop for autistic young adults in Houston, teaming up with the amazing Dr. Adria Baker. We brought the vibrant flavors, colors, and traditions of India to life in America.

Watching the joy on the faces of these young adults as they learned Indian languages, counted numbers, wrote alphabets in Hindi and Kannada, wore traditional Indian attire, and tasted hot, simmering curries was priceless. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of inclusivity and compassion.

Theatre at Rice: A Stage for Connection

As a theatre enthusiast back in India, joining the Rice Theatre Group was like finding a piece of home. Participating in the production of "Merrily We Roll Along" was a highlight of my year. I took on the roles of lighting and sound manager, which allowed me to explore the technical side of American theatre.

I got to manage the lights and sound, all while making new friends who shared my passion for the stage. Every rehearsal in Rice Campus was filled with laughter, creativity, and reminded me why I fell in love with theatre in the first place. It was a space where I felt connected through the magic of storytelling.

Building a Global Community: Fulbright @ RICE

The Fulbright community at Rice quickly became my second family. From luncheons at the Grand Rice Cohen Guest House to lively beer parties at Valhalla, every gathering was filled with laughter, lively debates, and shared stories. Trips to NASA, visits to the Houston Zoo, and impromptu game nights added to the sense of camaraderie.

These connections extended beyond Rice, creating a global network of friends and collaborators. Even after returning to our home countries, we continue to stay in touch, reminiscing about the unforgettable moments we shared. These relationships have not only enriched my personal life but also broadened my perspective on the world.

A Journey of Growth and Gratitude

Last month, as I sat in the audience at my home university’s annual convocation, waiting to receive the "Achiever’s Award"—a recognition of my Fulbright fellowship and impactful research publications—these thoughts filled my mind. I am overwhelmed with gratitude.

The Fulbright experience didn’t just shape my academic pursuits and broaden my worldview; it inspired me to return home and pursue science with purpose.

As I write this reflection, I hope to convey the profound impact this journey has had on my life.

To the Rice community—thank you for welcoming me with open arms and making this adventure so extraordinary. To future Fulbright scholars—enjoy every moment, for this journey will change you in ways you cannot yet imagine.

My Fulbright year will always remain a treasured chapter in my story.
